Elkhound Hill
Welcome to Elkhound Hill....
...Where Elkhounds are loved and trained
Elkhounds are our passion! Our dogs blend into our family as
protectors and companions. After many years of owning hounds,
Dwayne decided that he wanted a dog that would serve as a family
pet and loyal outdoor companion. The versatility of the elkhound
allows us to enjoy this breed 24/7 365 days a year! We have done a
great deal of research and traveled many miles to find elkhounds
that meet the breed standard while maintaining the inherent
characteristics of this remarkable, ancient breed.
Our facilities include a one acre wooded enclosure, providing
sufficient exercise. This native wood lot abounds with squirrels and
raccoons which entertains our dogs on a daily basis. Their scenting
and hunting instincts remain sharp in this natural environment. Our
dogs accompany us on frequent walks on our eleven acres as well
as on hundreds of acres of family-owned farms. While predominantly
household family pets, our elkhounds also absolutely love the
outdoors. This beautiful hunting breed is not a vicious killer; however,
they are quick to notify their owner of any approaching stranger.
Elkounds are a wonderful addition to any family!
We are located in south-central Pennsylvania and would love to
show you the most beautiful elkhounds in the world. Please call

Enjoy!!

Our Standards as Elkhound Breeders:
We are dedicated to the well-being of our Elkhounds. Raising these
wonderful dogs is not just our hobby but our passion.
How We Got Started: (Our Story)
My name is Dwayne Northcraft and I was first exposed to Elkhounds
whenever I visited farms as an Ag teacher eleven years ago. About
five years ago, I purchased my first Elkhound, Jobe, in West Virginia.
He is an excellent dog. I then tracked down the source of the
Elkhound that won the West Virginia State Hunt about four or five
years ago. Later, I purchased two dogs from Dick Bartlett, a
wonderful man, who has hunted these dogs for forty years. I have
been crossing his stock with my male. The pups have been treeing
game at around six months of age. I truly love these dogs and will
own this bloodline forever. The one acre wooded training pen, that I
own, is paradise for my Elkhounds. As you can see, they are
wonderful dogs. I am producing the highest quality of hunting dogs
that also meet the AKC standards. If you would like to see more
pictures, please e-mail or call me.
Sincerely,
Dwayne Northcraft

I have AKC Elkhounds that tree. I will show my dogs in the woods
on most weekends. They will tree a coon but are predominately
used on squirrels. I feel certain that they will tree most any game
that climbs. For example, stray cats are always getting treed and I
know that my male, Jobe will tree a bear. They will not take a cold
track and work it like a hound. I classify Elkies as hot-nosed dogs.
They hunt rather close, within a hundred yards or so when game is
plentiful. They handle well and use all the senses. Most squirrels
are treed with sight and sound but treeing by scent is not a
problem. They run most tracks with their heads off the ground and
wind well.
